6 Effective Methods to Activate UAN Number
- Most people activate their EPFO accounts through the EPFO portal.
- The next popular method is activation through their employer.
- Many also use the EPFO Umang mobile app for activation.
- A less common method is by giving a missed call to the provided number.
- Activating through SMS is also less commonly used.
- Aadhaar-based verification is available via the Umang app, but only if the UAN is already linked with Aadhaar.
1. Steps for Self-Activation through EPFO Portal
Step1 : Go to the official website www.epfindia.gov.in.
Step2 : Click on ‘UAN Member e-Sewa’ under the “Our Services” section.
Step3 : Click on ‘Activate UAN’ and enter below details
UAN number, Aadhaar number ( Mandatory)
PAN number (optional)
Member ID (provided by the employer)
Date of Birth
Step4: Make sure enter the details correctly. Once submitted, One-Time Password (OTP) will sent to your registered mobile number to verify the details.
After verification, the UAN will be activated. if you are getting any errors it means the details not matching with the existing govt databases.
2. Via Employer
Your Company HRs can initiate the activation process by providing the UAN number to you.
Sometimes the Company HRs may also activate UAN Number and link it to your PF account.
Note : This method is used by the employees who have newly joined the firm. In this situation by default HRs will activate UAN number.
3. Via Umang App
Step1 : You have to Download the “UMANG” app from Google Play Store or Apple App Store.
Step2 : Log in to the app using your mobile number. it will work only if the mobile number is registered with EPFO
Step3 : Normally in Umang app other government service apps are also included. we have to select “EPFO” from the list of services and select the UAN activation option.
Step4 : You can follow the steps to activate the UAN by entering the mandatory details like your UAN, Aadhaar, and Member ID.

4. Using the Missed Call Service
Normally very less people will use this method of activation.
Step1 : You can also activate UAN by giving a missed call to 011-22901406 from your registered mobile number.
Step2 : Wait for few seconds they will give you the details about UAN activation and registration by sending you a message.
5. Via Sending an SMS
Normally very less people will use this method of UAN number activate
Step1 : SMS can be sent to 7738299899 to activate UAN Number.
Step2 : The SMS should contain the following format <EPFOHO UAN>
After you sent the SMS, you will receive a confirmation message with UAN activation details.
6. Via Aadhaar Link Verification
This method only works if your UAN is linked to your Aadhaar number, it can be activated with few steps using the Aadhaar based verification method.
Note : Aadhar based verification also have multiple verification methods, To verify any of method you must be registered with your mobile number before you go for verification.
